American Psycho Movie Story

In 1987, Patrick Bateman, a wealthy New York City investment banker, spends time with his fiancée Evelyn and wealthy friends. He becomes enraged by a colleague’s business card and kills a homeless man. Later, he murders his colleague Paul Allen and disposes of the body. Private investigator Donald Kimball interviews Bateman about Allen’s disappearance. Bateman engages in sexual activities with two women, then tortures and kills them. He also tries to strangle a colleague but fails. Kimball interviews Bateman again, suggesting his alibi is solid. Bateman later goes on a killing spree, shooting a woman and several police officers. He confesses to his lawyer, Harold Carnes, and tries to clean Allen’s apartment, but it’s for sale. Bateman meets his colleagues for lunch and later realizes he may never face consequences for his actions. He is haunted by his deeds, unsure if they were real or imaginary.

American Psycho Movie Review

“It’s fitting that a woman directed “American Psycho.” She’s turned a novel about bloodlust into a film about men’s vanity. While a male director might have seen Patrick Bateman, the protagonist, as a serial killer due to psychological twists, Mary Harron views him as a man who’s subject to typical male drives and compulsions, just taken to the extreme. Most men aren’t chainsaw killers; they only act that way in business. Traders clawing each other on the stock exchange floor, used-car dealers trying to dump excess stock, and the joy of one megacorp stock-raiding another – it’s a dog-eat-dog world. As a novel, Bret Easton Ellis’ bestseller was passed around like a hot potato. As a film project, it went through various hands before landing back in Harron’s with Christian Bale in the lead. Harron is less impressed by the despicable Patrick Bateman than a man might have been, likely because as a woman director, she deals daily with men who resemble Bateman in everything but their body count. She sees the connection between Bateman’s morning routine of applying male facial products and his violent outbursts. He’s a narcissist driven by ego and fueled by greed, targeting mostly women but occasionally men. The film depicts the male executive lifestyle with a fetishistic devotion. A scene where businessmen compare their business cards reveals their sexual insecurities manifested as card envy. They engage in grim rivalries over clothes, offices, salaries, and restaurant tables. Bateman’s resemblance to a colleague becomes a running joke, highlighting their empty existence.”
