Babylon Movie Story

In 1926 Bel Air, Los Angeles, Manny Torres, a Mexican immigrant, helps transport an elephant to a wild party at Don Wallach’s mansion. He meets Nellie LaRoy, an aspiring “star” from New Jersey, and shares his dream of something bigger with her. Amidst the chaos, Manny rescues Jane Thornton from a drug overdose. Also at the party are Lady Fay Zhu and Sidney Palmer, among others. Nellie catches the eye of Hollywood executives and quickly rises to fame, while Manny climbs the ranks at Kinoscope Studios. As the film industry shifts to sound, Manny adapts and becomes a director, but Nellie struggles with the transition, leading to personal troubles. In 1932, Manny faces pressure to fire Fay due to her perceived lesbian relationship with Nellie. Meanwhile, Jack Conrad, Manny’s friend and a fading film star, grapples with his declining popularity. Elinor St. John tries to salvage Nellie’s image, but she continues to spiral out of control. As Hollywood changes, Manny’s loyalty is tested, and tragic events unfold for Jack, Fay, and Nellie. Manny eventually offers to flee with Nellie to Mexico, but she chooses to stay behind. Years later, Manny returns to California with his family and reflects on his past while watching “Singin’ in the Rain.” Throughout the tumultuous decades, Manny’s journey mirrors Hollywood’s evolution, filled with dreams, successes, and heartaches.

Babylon Movie Review

In “Babylon,” director Damien Chazelle takes a cynical look at Hollywood’s wild early days. Set against the transition from silent films to talkies, the film follows Manny Torres, Nellie LaRoy, and Jack Conrad, among others, caught up in the frenzy of the era. Despite its epic scale and extravagant production, “Babylon” struggles to find coherence amidst its chaotic scenes and exaggerated characters. Chazelle’s film aims to challenge perceptions of classic Hollywood, highlighting its dark underbelly of excess and exploitation. However, the movie’s satirical tone often overshadows any emotional depth, leaving the audience disconnected from the characters’ struggles. While visually stunning and technically impressive, “Babylon” falls short of delivering a compelling narrative that resonates with viewers. Despite its ambitious scope, “Babylon” ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to explore the complexities of Hollywood’s golden age. Chazelle’s fascination with the era’s glamour and intrigue is evident, but the film lacks a cohesive vision to tie together its disparate elements. As a result, “Babylon” may dazzle audiences with its spectacle, but it fails to leave a lasting impact beyond its flashy surface.

Babylon Movie Rating

According to IndieWire and The Hollywood Reporter, as well as Chazelle himself, reception to the film was “polarized”. On Rotten Tomatoes, Babylon holds an approval rating of 57% based on 361 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10. The critics consensus states that Babylon’s overwhelming muchness is exhausting, but its well-acted, well-crafted glitz and glamour can often be an effective distraction. On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 61 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable reviews”. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “C+” on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported that 74% of audience members gave the film a positive score, with 47% saying they would definitely recommend it.
